I think the only benefit of learning the times tables is for mental multiplication and devision. However that skill is incredibly important.
For example you are in a shop and you want to buy 6 apples which are 70p each. Knowing your times tables you can immediately figure that the total price is £4:20

Learning all your tables off by heart makes the rest of your maths that much easier.I'm surprised at how many kids nowadays reach for the calculator when faced with something like 6x4=?

Makes life so much easier when you come to do maths later in life!!
Its a matter of learning them once and you will have them forever!!
Start by learning the easier ones, such as 2x, 5x and 10x and then go for the more complicated ones!
Good luck!

I learnt all my times tables as a kid, and am very glad I did. It just makes stuff.... easier. I dont think I'm really clever enough to answer the second part of of your question though.

It is a basic foundation to all math. Just memorize them instead of finding a reason not to. That is a dangerous habit. All good things come from doing the work!!!

Yeah, when you get into algebra and have long equations to figure out, you will want to spend your time figuring out what X is not what 8x7 is.
