If the surgery is for health reasons and not cosmetic in nature (nose jobs and liposuction), then it is tax deductible. Only the portion not covered by insurance is deductible. Also, only the portion that is in excess of 7.5% of your adjusted gross income is tax deductible.

cosmetic surgery or covered by insurance, no. it would be part of your itemized deductions however they have made the minimums so high that it doesn't do any good. basically a person has to be really sick for the medical expenses to count

If surgery is not covered by any insurance scheme total cost of hospitalisation is tax free.
