Ferrets live from 6 to 10 years as a rule 6 being more common than 10 though I have heard to one that lived to 13. They will take all the space you can give them. They are very active so give them as much room as you can spare. They also need a lot of love and attention and a lot of handling but they are great fun to have as pets if a little bit destructive sometimes.

Ferrets from pet stores live 6-9 years. There are specialty breeders, but those ferrets tend to live 4-5 years due to health problems stemming from inbreeding. The amount of space doesn't matter as much as the amount of time they are allowed out of the cage to play. A small two story cage is sufficient if you let the ferret out to play at least 4 hours a day. You don't have to let them out in the whole house for play, just one room with toys and things to climb in/on/under. Their health and attitude is dependant on daily social interactions.
