I agree with Brandit. Money is not evil in and of itself but the love of it is. When love for personal monetary gain controls your life...that is evil. A side effect of this condition would be "compassion with an ulterior motive." How do I monetarily gain by showing compassion? That is twisted and evil, all because of improperly placed love. Love and compassion are closely linked but they are not one and the same. Love comes first and is then expressed through compassion. Just my opinion.

A very good question , the earth is 16 billion years old , we have been here a very short time 2 million years and only in the last 2000 years have we advanced and multiplied so quick .We experience the need to push our selves harder and harder to accomplish the tasks we set our selves each day . Hence we don't see the blind , the poor the starving even though it streams through our living room each day on tv ,The reason this is so, can be seen in the extremes of behaviour and consciousness where greed apathy and violence exist along side the intellectual and spiritual advances of profound quality. There are many enlighten people in the world .The real predators are us , this is not a time to be divided like sheep and goats , this is the time to decide for you , who you are .This is a decision all mankind must make for if we do not , we will be doomed.I alone do not have the answer , it must be a global concern to us all , knowledge that is of urgent need to us all at the present time if we are to survive .

Those are fine points about money & greed. And I too think that it is the leading root. Over the course of history, there has been war over land, resources, gold(In our case money) Things that lead to well, destruction. It would seem that these material things mean more to us than our own lives. And I would think that our life is priceless because it is one of a kind. The unique things we see or learn. The things we touch, feel, or even taste. It's like waking up, and instead of picking up the newspaper which you know has bad news, you look up at the sky. The fluffy & different shaped clouds. How blue the background is, or if your lucky you get to see the sun stare at you for a second between clouds before they break up. Even a shot of sun light beaming down on the earth is nice. But maybe most of are blind to the fact that materials do lead to greed, taking the course of the dark road. And that we would take a life that's priceless for something that has a "Cost Value." Pretty funked up, isn't it?

Maybe the lack of compassion and reverence for one's self is the 'root' that grows into an unruly evil weed.

selfishness is the root....and lack of compassion is part of that, yes. So is Greed, intolerance and ignorance. Evil spawns when given these environments to grow in, so beware.

No, but it is the reason for most evils. There is also a lack of compassion for earth, animals, and ourselves.

definitely not. i can't really not pinpoint what it is but lack of compassion in its own sense, is just being apathetic to other people. but that doesn't suggest you're causing evil deeds to others.
