It's mostly a process of elimination. Let's say you need the numbers 5,6, and 7 to finish out a row. By checking the columns and sections you see that 5 and 6 can't go in that column so you know it has to be 7. Now you're down to 5 and 6 to finish the row. Whoa! There's already a 6 in that section so you write in the 5. That leaves the 6 to finish out the row.
