I had to fight, too, when my son was in second grade and came home with an award for being two years above grade level in all subjects and a report card with all "O"s (outstanding). I knew that he would become a behavior problem if he became bored (even though there had never been problems in that area), or just "check out".
I met with the teacher twice, with no results, so I demanded a meeting with the teacher and principal. After 1/2 hour of dickering, the principal FINALLY asked me if I had had him tested for the GATE program (you'd think she'd know if I had, especially since there were only 150 kids in the school!). I never knew that was an option.
Fortunately, after waiting 6 months for testing, he qualified for a gifted magnet program in third grade. He stayed in the program through his senior year, and ended up getting what was equal to a private school education.
So, ask your children's principal for an evaluation, and get them into an appropriate school placement. All children are intitled to a free, appropriate public school education according to PL94-142, even gifted students (public law 94-142, enacted by Congress to address the needs of special education students). Yes, GATE programs are "special ed", because they require an IEP (individualized education plan).

Try talking to his teacher and see if there is anything he can do that would be more appropriate for his level of intelligence. If she doesn't help then go to the Principal and so on. Keep going higher up the ranks until you get someone who will listen to your concerns and take you seriously. Maybe see if he can be skipped a grade? Or if he doesn't want to do that have a higher grade level work brought to him, while he stays in the same class room. If all else fails, change schools. Try and find a school that would be right for your son. Charter schools are a great choice!

Get them scientific games and toys. I was one of those kids and that's what my parents did. Chemistry kits, balsa airplane kits, electronic kits(ya know 301 projects in one), I also started to play guitar which I still do 26 years later.
Anything that will get their mind working is good, they need a challenge, something hard to do because it's just the way it works. School is boring because it doesn't bring them the satisfaction of having overcome a problem.
Some tools and materials so that they can build stuff is cool too.
I've built pinballs, electric guitars and radio controlled buggies when I was 13-15...

Im as so glad that I dont have this problem..my daughter is in a talented and gifted class in her middle school and she is constantly challenged. Although we are at a Charter school rather than a public school. If your school doesnt off a T&G program do you know if any districts in your area do? Have you thought about promoting him up a level? Good Luck!

you could write to the PTA (parent/teacher association) or even join and contribute your ideas and problems to them, they may be able to help find a solution and it could help so many other kids. a fair few teachers wont do more than they have to. they find intelligent kids a problem as they havent planned anything and they really only wan the pay check. ive been really lucky throughout my scholl career as i've had really good teachers (and my dad was the vice principle) I'm not the most intelligent kid in the world but if i was stuck, the teachers were willing to speak with me after the lesson and give me extra work so i could get my head around it.

my sons been behind his whole life and his school have done nothing. what is it that you want? you should be happy that your children have a good chance of passing gcse unlike 50% of children in my area. my advice would be count yourself lucky and give the school a break.
