or for that matter the physical ablility to create societies, "flying saucers", and all the other things assume about what we do not know.

Well the main idea is that due to the large mathematical probabilities, given the number of stars and planets known/unknown in the universe, that life may happen on hundreds or thousands of planets.... and even if 1/10 of 1% of those life sustaining planets could create a creature with a brain then mathematically it should happen a few times.

Naturally we assume if it has a brain that it will actually form societies which will progress in technology and if those societies had been in existence for even a few thousand years before us, they would have space travel capability.

The bigger issue is why do scientists insist on looking for water/carbon based life forms when there could very well be life forms that breathe more abundant gases (like hydrogen) and live on hydrogen peroxide (which can be very close to water in molecular structure)?

I believe there are aliens out there, I even believe we may have been visited once or twice, but I do believe that people have also hyped up the incidents and a lot of reports are bogus. Society has shown us mass hysteria before.... look at the war of the worlds radio broadcast for a good example.

Thanks for the question.

Thats a good question. Because all the probs we send out are really just looking for microscopic life on other planets. At least in our solar system.
