If you want paid for security then Nod32 by a company called Eset is the best.
Otherwise any of the top free ones are fine.
Theres a full list of security software on my 360 blog, click on my avatar and follow the link.

http://www.eset.com/ -Nod32 anti malware.

You need one firewall, one anti virus, at least one anti spyware and an anti adware.

Hi there,

Some of the most recommended programs on here always seem to be AVG or Avast - although this is likely to be because they are free? Looking at current protection ratings, AVG scores a lowly 90% protection against all known viruses, whilst Avast comes in at 92%. This means they are letting through one in every ten viruses - pretty shocking.

The same goes for Spybot and Adaware. In fact if you had AVG, Spybot and Adaware installed, you would surprisingly only be protected from circa 60% of all known malware (viruses, adware, spyware, trojans, etc).

Norton and McAfee are the "best known" security products, which are currently protecting against something like 98.3% and 97% of all known viruses - a much better score. However, both of these are known for being very heavy programs which can tend to slow down certain machines. If you are thinking of installing either of these I would definitely recommend you download their free trial to check it does not affect your machine in this way prior to opening your wallet.

If you would be interested in other Security products that are better than all of these, you should try either Prevx1, Kaspersky or F-Secure who all score over a 99% protection rating. Out of these three my recommendation would be Prevx1, as this is the quickest at protecting against new outbreaks of malware.

Burn norton - avg did very badly in independant tests - used mcafee and found it to be pretty dire in terms of detecting viruses- - been using kaspersky for over a year now and never had a problem. It is SUPERB! Made by the Russians, what more can be said ;)

I use webroot's antivirus with antispyware (formerly spysweeper with antivirus). Very good at blocking infections, downloaders, and browser hijackers. If you want a different firewall than windows firewall, zonealarm has a very good free one. I find Kaspersky a little difficult to configure, and it needs to be configured. As delivered doesn't turn on all the options you need. Norton is ok, but has trouble sometimes verifying your subscription, which is a pain. Uses less resources than it used to. McAfee, to me, is just difficult. If you have any problems with it, it's very difficult to configure, manually update, etc. Forget CA. Total resource hog. And only so-so antispyware protection. Pc-cillin is ok, but if you need to reinstall you have to remember the userid and password you registered it with. It's not enough to have the keycode. And it's antispyware is just ok. Again this is my opinion, but the free products are not at the same level. Lots of people like avg and spybot, but I think they have serious deficiencies for real protection. I ususally skip answering any security questions when people want "really good and free" because I don't think you can have both. However, it's up to you.

I personally use AVG at home and Symantec at work, but have recently been told that NOD32 has been making waves in the AV sector and has come out as the top in various tests done.

As far as the free product AVG has worked like a dream for me and (touch wood) have never been struck down by any virus'. I've never really liked Mcafee but that's more personal preference than any major problems I've had.

I have tried mcafee and that is good I also tried AVG free antivirus software and that was okay too. However, they all seem to slow-down my PC and Norton's was the the worst of all. I would go mcafee

Kasperky or AVG...Forget McAfee.

I have Kaspersky on one of my machines and I use AVG's free offerings on others, so I speak from experience here.

The AVG setup should be a little lighter on resources than Kaspersky, but Both will offer you solid protection.

Someone else recomended NOD32 here. http://eset.com/ I have that on one of my systems and I have to say when configured correctly, it's one of the best out there. Extreamly powerful heuristics scanning.

NOD32 is not an Internet security package. It does cover viruses, trojans, worms, keyloggers, spyware and adware, but it does not have a firewall or spam filter. You would need to install a firewall like Zone Alarm: http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/1001_cnet_zdnet/zlsSetup_65_737_000_en.exe and a spam filter of your choice to be complete.

Last but not least, please do not install Norton!!! Junk!!!

Kaspersky is supposed to be the best, however, not by much. AVG is free and highly rated. McAfee? Don't go there. Once you get it on your computer, it takes real hard work to get it off.
