Yes we exist! Not in great numbers, but here nonetheless. I cook, clean, sew, preserve food, many things that dear June did. One difference is I don't wear taffeta dresses and pearls; I'm more of a jeans and t-shirt kind of woman. I also am not subservient to my husband.
Being a housewife and mother is the career I chose. We gave up a lot of material things because we rely on one income. It's not a decision that was made lightly. It is also one I will not debate with anyone.

Back when my husband made more money and before we had baby #4, I was the traditional housewife. I stayed home, took care of the house, kids, all errands, etc.
Now that circumstances have changed, he still works days while I work nights and I still take care of the house, kids, all the errands, etc, but now I have to factor in naps since I don't sleep much at night. Unfortunately, this also means that it takes longer to get the housework done. The kids try to help, but their schoolwork still comes first so cleaning is still primarily my responsibility.
He's looking for a better paying job so we can go back to how things were before. LOL

Because the world as a whole is changing. Women are taking on more roles in the work force, instead of just being the mom and the house maker. Back then it wasn't acceptable for a women to work, it was the man's job to provide for his family and the woman's role to care for them. Now the roles have changed, and have reversed in some cases. It's no longer taboo for women to have their own careers. And it's perfectly acceptable for the man to stay home.
I can't really speak for anyone else, but my mother worked because she had to. In alot of people's cases they just can't afford to live on one income...meaning the woman has to go to work. It's just the way of the world.
I do happen to know quite a few women like this who's husbands are in the military. They stay home due to moving so much, but also to keep the "home fires burning" so to speak. Make sure the house is running properly because their husband might be deployed or out of the home for so long. But I can assure you it does exist even outside of the military.
It's just a matter of personal taste for one thing...and a matter of finance for another.

Yes they do exist. I was one for a few years and many of my friends are too. But we are not like June cleaver..we have changed with the times. Yes , we take care of house, husband and kids..but we take more time for ourselves and have our own identities. Being subservient is not appealing to the modern housewife.

While there are still many housewives left, June Cleaver or Carol Brady is pretty much nonexistent. Society and inflation has caused women to go out of the home and get careers so they are not as abundant as they once were.

I don't know, to be honest. I know I used to be a housewife until I realized one salary isn't comfortably covering everything. Sure, it would be GREAT to have someone work and not have to worry about everything(billwise) but today it's just not feasible. SIGH They made it look so easy. Probably gone for good.

Personally, I'm extremely grateful that being a housewife isn't my only option as a woman. Being part of the work world and contributing to society makes me feel whole and a part of it all. I think if I were to stay home, I would lose my sense of identity and feel totally seperate from society.

I don't honestly believe it really existed. It's a television ideal. The prettied-up house gal didn't exist because she had to work too hard.
