Actually they are supposed to be asexual... (without gender) to appeal to a broader range of children. BUT your son is right in a way... the performer inside the suit is male.

Tinky-Winky is a boy. He carries a "magic bag" not a purse.
Dipsy is also male.
Laa-Laa is the girl.
Though Po's gender IS unknown by the general population, most speculation points to Po being a female. This would promote the balance of two males and two females. Po is the smallest of the Teletubbies.
