A redneck is a lower class individual from the United States' Southern region. They were originally called rednecks because the back of their necks would get sunburned while they were outside tending to their farms. It later came to indicate the lower class Southern culture. For most people, it now indicates Southern white trash. However, many lower class white Southerners have turned it around and use it proudly to describe their heritage. (My sister-in-law's a "redneck and proud of it!")

A redneck was a poor white person who worked in the cotton fields with the negroes. The white boy or man would sunburn badly on the back of the neck.He was known as a poor redneck.

ok first of all being a redneck is not a bad thing... most of us take pride in being one we are not all uneducated but we are southern and proud of it we dont care what people think about us we are just who we are and some people think we are different or wrong but who cares .... oh and rednecks dont take $**t from anyone

A redneck is a boot wearing, beer drinking, truck driving, American flag waving, gun toting, two steppin, bull riding, crazy cowboy. But don't think for a minute we are all uneducated. We just talk like it ya'll. (And no, my neck is not really red.)
