I am having a VERY old quilt repaired by a friends mom. My question is how much should I pay her for doing this? She has no idea what to charge and I don't know what I should pay her. Can anyone help with this?

Bless her--working on very old fabric takes talent. If you're happy with the work and the quilt is important to you--ask yourself this "what would I want to be paid?". Find out how long it took her. Did she have to buy any supplies to do the work? Figure a minimum of $20-$30 an hour and then tack on some extra because you have your heirloom fixed. I fixed a dress for a friend, it was very involved and I bought the stuff to do the repair...trust me--when she handed me $20 I was a bit miffed. Something else to think about--if you are both uncomfortable with the money end of it--find out something she really wants and/or needs (even if it's a night out away from the kids) and give her that instead. If she does a lot of crafts--give her a gift card to her favorite store--gets her hair done? a gift gard to the beauty salon. Any of those with a pretty and hand written thank you note would probably be more appreciated than the money.

Are you happy with the work? If so, how much time did she put into it? 20 minutes, 8 hours, 48 hours? If she spent a half day I would give her 40.00. If she has over a days work into it then 100.00 would not be out of the question. Again did she do a good job and are you happy with it? Your happiness could be priceless if you plan to pass it down to your kids.

Call a few repair places and ask for a rough quote over the phone for what needs repairing. Base what you give her off that.
