Is there any way to rip a rented movie onto the hard drive of my computer for viewing later or storing it on a portable flash drive? If so, would i need a special program? If so, is there any free software that i could use?? How would i rip a movie like this? Does it have to be compressed to a zip file??

Yes & No, First some DVD's are copy protected and very difficult to RIP, also when you RIP a DVD your literally ripping the files out of their directory structure, so you will have no menu just random files without identifable names.
With a video capture device any video/audio signal can be stored.

It is possible but only about the movies you already own and not for rental. Otherwise it's illegal and violate copyright matters.

If you want to know how to backup YOUR OWN movies, modify your question or make another one new.

You could also use a program like http://www.autogk.me.uk/
to make it into a much smaller .avi, file
but you,ll have to use a program like http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html
to break the encryption on the dvd so you can copy.
