I think it is the cause and effect syndrome. Everything is governed by this, whether we know or not.

The ancient Babylonians, as did most ancient societies, believed in a balance of power throughout the universe. Good continially locked in combat with evil, chaos at odds with order. The constant butting of opposite forces. I think the Hagelian philosophy of opposites coming together to produce some new force came from this idea.
I believe that the Brits have a saying "at sixes and sevens with everything" in other words, "At odds with everything" So what do you get when you multiply six times seven? Forty two.
So the secret of the universe is, in fact, 42.
Or, you could simply take the secret of the universe for what it is - a mystery and be both thankful and terrified that we have yet to explain it all.
