Chronic depression is caused by imbalance of brain chemicals, and you'll need to see a doctor for diagnosis and medication, which can help you control your moods.
Depression caused by problems in your life - that's another matter. A loss can cause you to feel blue, though this should only be temporary. On the one hand, your mood can be helped by being your own best friend, do something nice for yourself, do something you love, something delightful, satisfying. On the other hand, if ongoing problems are causing you to feel depressed, you need to address the problem and try to resolve it...make changes in your situation. Any depression that persists...you should see a counselor. Most of the time, the causes are complex and you won't be able to unravel it by yourself.

Depression has a wide variety of causes, I suggest that you consult a doctor as he/she might be able to advise you on a course of action, or even prescribe medicine. Often, simply changing the way you think about things and the way you live your life can ease depression. Some of the common suggestions are that you should take regular exercise, eat a balanced diet and get plenty of sleep. However, your depression may be more deeply rooted, in which case you might want to consider counselling.
I found prozac did help me with my depression, but ultimately you need to tackle the root cause of your depression to make it go away.

Decide to think differently.Usually we feel our selves slipping and whether we fall or stand up is our choice. When my daughter use to slip into depression, she would close her curtains and sleep.I would go into her room and open the curtains and go into the living room and turn on the radio for music can be uplifting to ones soul. She was an adult and this use to make her mad,but what could she say to her mother ?not a thing, unless she wanted to lose her teeth,we African American mothers won't tolerate disrespect even from grown kids and she knew this so eventually she'd get up and join the world.I taught her that when she feels herself wanting to close herself off from the world,it's OK for a rainy day but other than that she is to open the curtains and let God's day help her through.

First of all, I would consult with a doctor because sometimes depression can have a physiological reason, in which case you would have to get medication to avoid depression. Also, seek counseling no matter what, as this will help you keep yourself in check.
Good luck....
