I am getting a laptop and it has a wireless card installed in the laptop. My question is do I still need to hook up a ethernet cord into my modem if I buy a wireless router? I'm new to all this laptop stuff but I already have a home computer with a dsl connection with verizon. My verizon modem only has one port for a ethernet cord which is going into my computer that I have now.

Yes, you will need a total of two ethernet cords now. One to connect the modem to the router and one to connect from the router to the home computer. Most routers come with at least one cable, so you may not need to buy one.

Essentially, you will unplug the dsl connection (coming from your verizon modem) at the back of your home computer. You then plug this into the "internet" port at the back of your router. Different routers have a different name for this port (check your user manual). You will then take another ethernet cable and run it from a connection port on the router to the back of your home computer (where the dsl connection was originally plugged in). Go through the setup procedure for the router on your home computer and you should then have a wireless network at home. Turn on your laptop and go through its network settings to search for availaible wireless networks and you should see your home network there.

P.S. Make sure you setup security/encryption when setting up your router. You dont want to give your neighbours free internet.

Hope this helps.

You won't need an ethernet cable for the Laptop. But you will need to connect the modem to the router. So you will need to use one for that. But since your laptop has a wireless card you will not need one for the laptop

You will need to connect the modem to a wireless router. It is a good idea to then connect a computer to the router to configure and troubleshot. I keep one spare cable to connect my laptop to configure and troubleshot and since most new laptops and routers come with a spare cable it isn't a bad idea to keep a spare.

examine the labels on the decrease back of the container - both 3 or 4 of those ports are all accessible. One port will be reserved for the incoming signal on your cable modem, yet because you've 3 left, that ought to artwork!
