my 18 year old son has just passed his driving test . can he now tow a trailer legally . my insurance covers trailers but i wondered if there was some kind of law against young drivers or a time delay before being allowed.

If you have a cat B licence only (not a B+E) you CAN tow a trailer, but only up to 750kg (that is quite a lot so chances are your trailer tent will be OK). If you are driving a van, the total gross wight of the vehicle and trailer can't be over 3500kg.

Car driving licence first obtained since 1 January 1997
Drivers who passed a car test on or after 1 January 1997 are required to pass an additional driving test in order to gain entitlement to category B+E and all larger vehicles. In addition to the new driving tests, drivers of vehicles which fall within subcategories C1, C1+E, D1 and D1+E also have to meet higher medical standards.

look on the front of his license bottom left there is a list of catagorys car towing a trailer is B-E if that is on that list yes his is you can check all cat against the pictures on the back

Check his Insurance documents in case they have inserted a clause. However not in my experience. It will affect the behaviour of the towing vehicle and reversing is fun.
