I have several, my main favourites being Vincent Cronin (who wrote so well on Napoleon); Christopher Hibbert (especially his work on the French Revolution) and Alison Weir (fascinating books on English history, mainly the Tudors). Also Alison Plowden. But I'll read almost anything on a period I like.

2. Jacksonian Era--Robert Remini
3. Lincoln and the Civil War--Doris Kearns Goodwin, James McPherson, David Herbert Donald, Stephen Oates

My favourite historian is Barbara W. Tuchman. The author of many books, such as 'The Guns of August' (The Great War), 'Stilwell and the American Experience in China' (China/U.S. - World War II). She writes about different people and periods of history, and her feel for characterizations is excellent.

My favorite was Hendrick Van Loon, from Holland. That was some time back, but I still have a fondness for his books.
