The most successful teams in terms of trophies are listed below, for me the importance per trophy is as follows:
League Title
European Cup
FA Cup
League Cup
Therefore:
1st Liverpool (18 league titles, 5 European Cups, 7 FA Cups
7 League Cups)
2nd Man Utd (15 league titles, 2 European Cups, 11 FA
Cups, 1 League Cups)
3rd Arsenal (12 league titles, 10 FA Cups, 2 League Cups)

Therefore Liverpool are clearly the most successful English Club side. The majority of their European Cups were won in proper fashion meaning that a team HAD TO BE the champions of their own prospective country in order to enter the competition, unlike today whereby a team that has finished 4th & say 20+ pts behind the champions qualifies allbeit via a prelim-stage.

Must be Liverpool: I don't think anyone has won the English championship many more times than them & they have been European Champions 5 times.
I'm not a Liverpool fan, by the way.

Wanderers FC. They won 5 FA Cups between 1872 and 1878, and were disbanded shortly after. They may not have won the most trophies, but they have best winning rate.
Obviously there were no Football League or European competitions at that point, so who know what they would've won.
