Do you mean as a college major? I have a BA in philosophy. I can say that for me there are a couple of negatives. One is there isn't much you can do with an undergraduate in it. Unless you want to start out in a low-level job and work up. If you are planning on graduate school in philosophy as well you migh find a teaching job with a PhD but that's a lot of schooling. I got my BA and then went back for a library science degree. The other negative is that studying philosophy causes you to question everything.

There is absolutely no negative side of trying to get a bit more clever, so every education including philosophy will make you better. I find That STUDYING philosophy is a very fine past-time, if maybe not to make a lot of money of it.

I don't see any negatives. Aside from psychology, Philosophy is the best thing ever.
It will never make you lose on debates or discussions :)

The only practical application of it is writing and teaching. Most of the time, it doesn't pay very well. If one wants to be a philosopher, then they should strive to be a college professor, too. ;-)
