I agree with Stuart - check the pistons & rings.
If it has been through a lot of water, it may be that the water got into the cylinders, and the con-rods have been damaged by trying to compress it.

The reason the larger (1.6 and 1.8) K-series engines have head-gasket problems is often due to the cylinder linings moving.
Most engines have dry liners (including 1.1 and 1.4 K-series engines), but these have semi-wet linings that can move or occasionally distort, causing problems with sealing at the head gasket. It is possible they could cause other problems too, such as poor piston-ring sealing. Trying to compress water in the engine could have caused a problem with these liners.

oh undesirable success. get the pinnacle skimmed, and rebuild it. and locate out why the cooling equipment failed. its many times the fan no longer working, or loss of water simply by a chop up hose orthe pump failed... all low-fee factors... its unlike rebuilding a diesel and is a days artwork. fee must be around the 5-600 quid mark. telephone TK advertisements on 02476 684237. theyre on J3 or the M6 beside the Ricoh section in Coventry. (its purely a telephone call) and theyll clarify it. or in simple terms get a rangy engine. or a P6 3.5 V8, the previous rover SD1 engine. the Sd1 has bigger compresssion, however the terrific is the P6b. i outfitted one into my landy, i outfitted injection3.9 cams and have been given some new strombergs..organic rock n roll, espeically over a ploughed field! and heres the solid section, if i saved it decrease than 60, itd do 34 to the gallon (over 60 it became bloody risky and you didnt steer it, lots as objective it interior the regular path...and want.)
