My little boy is 8 wks old and his forehead and cheeks are really dry and flakey. So much for baby soft skin, he feels like a brillo pad! I've tried olive oil, baby oil and johnson's baby moistureiser but they havent made any difference. I don't use any bath products and use non bio washing powder. His body, arms and legs are fine, its just his face. Does anyone have any other ideas, he's getting christened in 3 weeks time.

This is completely normal and happened to my daughter as well. My doctor described it as her kind of "shedding her skin" from in the womb. They go from living in fluid for 9 months to being in dry air. I too tried all sorts of lotions and creams and nothing worked. If you just wait it out, it will go away in a couple of weeks.

Oatmeal is a natural moisturizer and will soothe dry itchy skin.
Get a pair of nylon knee highs or pantyhose. Fill the foot with a couple cups of oatmeal. Cut and tie the end in a knot and dropit into the baby's bath water. While you are bathing the baby you can use the oatmeal bag like a cloth and let a nice thick coat of oatmeal sit on the skin for a few minutes. Also squeeze the bag to allow the oatmeal to leach into the bath. This works wonders and feels great. Safe and effective for your baby's dry skin.
Eczema is usaully on wrists, under elbows, knees, ankles, feet, crevices, but not so much on the face. It is probably just a natural dry skin. My children had dry skin too.

He will outgrow this with time. My son had a similar problem and it was quite frustrating. I think you are doing the right things, you can take him to the GPs but in my experience they said he had eczema and gave him E45 which only made things worse.

If you have the heaters on, put a bowl of water in the room so that the air does not get too dry and dehydrate his skin. If you are breastfeeding, eat foods that are rich in Vitamin A & E - Carrots, Avocado etc.

If it does not get any better before his christening, he's only a baby and I'm sure he'd look cute all the same.

All the best.

If you live in an area that uses dry heat then you may want to think about putting a humidifier in his room. Make sure when you take him outside that you put a little moisturizer on his face. You may want to use a different type of moisturizer on his face also. Try using a small amount of the moisturizer that you use on your face, or buy one that contains no fragrance and is hypo-allergenic. You may want to look at Almay products.

Just to be on the safe side, give your pediatrician a call to make sure you're doing the correct thing. I've seen other babies with this problem and it's perfectly normal.

I was going to suggest olive oil (which worked for my little girl's dry skin) but as you've already tried that and lots of other things, I would just say, ask your midwife or GP, or even try a pharmacist - they may be able to recommend something gentle enough to use on such delicate skin. Good luck.

Try E45, little and often, maybe every hour or 2 to start with, then 3 or 4 times a day when it calms down a little.

Have you seen your GP to rule our eczema and other skin conditions? S/he should be able to advise you further on what products might help.

Well, when my daughter was that old she had the same thing but it was on her foot. I found out later that it was Eczema. It is treatable. Research it on the net to find out more. You could also use a Tea Tree soap made by Paul Mitchell. It works wonders on my little girl. Eczema is treatable but if it doesn't go away within a few months then it will never go away. You have to keep Hydrocortisone cream on it. Take your baby to the doc and see what he thinks. Good luck.

I'd avoid Johnsons, its got perfume in it. Aqueous cream from Boots (ask for a big tub its cheaper about £5) . Smear some on often. You can get it on prescription if you take him to the the doctors. Poor little chap. This stuff really does help

If those other things didn't work it might be more than dry skin, so you should see the doctor. Those things should have worked. You might also try Playtex Baby Magic - it worked for my son.
