Define the problem and look at the results realistically...do the results show and improvement or not? Be able to distinguish between what the person really needs and what they want. If you are giving them what they need, it will improve. If you are giving them what they want...many times this only makes things worse...know the difference.

I guess you would have to see a positive result from those concerned. it would mean they are adapting to your ways of helping towards something productive.
on the other hand, you know that it is making it worse for others when you bridge their present predicament to self-pity, insecurity or negativity. If that happens, i think you should change your method, if not, you know it's time to let loose and let it be. a lot of people don't want to be helped especially when their ego is concerned. e.g. a person who doesn't have a good job but 'knows and sees' she doesn't have a good job. I quoted those two words to point out that she knows what responsibility is laid upon her, why and why not can she find a better job. Inspiring her with words for motivation, citing examples how busy you are at your own work or how many white-collared jobs you're doing, would gouge goullies in that person's head instead of comfort.

Its worse for the other if they intended to capitalize on situation, When you enable someone, you have increases the competition of everyone else, and the resources are finite. As has been said before, Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. You just don't always know what the reaction will be.

If someone comes to you with a question you may give advice and help make the decision making easier. I have talked to friends and family when I have to make a decision. It has helped out. Your question confuses me some. Are you asking about decision making or physically helping?

sounds like you need more help than anyone with the kind of condition you're in.
do you need someone to help you to clear your confused mind?
honestly, i don't think it would, and not only to you, but to everyone.
