F*** - a word of 16th century German origin, related to MIddle Dutch - 'fokken' meaning 'to strike'

S*** - Old English (unattrib) 'scite' - dung, 'scitan' - to defecate, Old Norse 'Skita' - to defecate.

C**k - referring to male fowl

C**t - 13th century of Germanic origin, related to Old Norse, kunta, Middle Low German, kunte

Three of these four sexual/bodily function swear words come from older languages. Those languages became regarded as crude and words associated withe them ditto

Other swear words are religious in nature - or 'blasphemous' In Christianity because of the commandment not to take The Lord's name in vain.

swear words differ from culture to culture and from language to language.

Example, in English speaking North America swear words relate to bodily functions/acts while in French swear words relate to religious items.

In general people consider *swear words* to be words that are offensive in some way to the culture they belong to.
