You can do it - you just need a little practice.
Make can try with a duo eye shadow (a Maybelline/L'Oreal will even do). Apply the lighter shade inside your eyelid (closer to the nose) - it's even ok to color the whole eyelid with the lighter shade.
Then take the darker shade & color the outside of the eyelid. Just apply lightly & then blend it softly with the light color by using the makeup applicator.
Practice makes perfect.

Start out by putting foundation on (even on your eyelids).
Then start with your soft color- above that apply your darker color & make it wider toward the slant on the lid & dont be afraid to do it dars. after you do that- apply another soft layer above.
Then take a blush brust and feather it over your lids to blend & lighten. You will be amazed at the results!

Get a very expensive make-up artist to do your makeup.

That is what the celebs do.

What you do is pick out the eye shadow that will go with your outfit, then you put it on lightly.
