The truth is, it is an essential part of life. It is incorporated before birth. If your soul hasn't been too badly suppressed, as many folks' souls have, you can see others' souls in their eyes. I'm fascinated when I look into little kids's eyes (whom I've never seen before) and they light up as if we were long, lost friends. Dogs have this too, along with cats, to some degree. When my first son was first born, within minutes, he opened his eyes, looked at me, and smiled for the first time outside the womb. It was the most memorable time in my life. Unfortunately, too many of us suppress this over time, and end up living a lousy life as a result.

A great Saint, Swami Muktananda Paramahamsa, said that the Atman (soul)takes its seat in the body in the 5th month of pregnancy. I believe prior to his the fetus is but a growth on the mothers body. I cite muktananda from memory, it could be he said the 3rd month.

I don't think anyone really knows the answer to that question. I've heard though that there are many other dimensions to the Universe that we are unable to perceive. Perhaps the soul is a part of us that belongs to one of those dimensions but we just don't know how to prove it.

All things are one. Thus everything is connected on some level. It's connected to the physical to the spiritual, and beyond.
