It depends for what purpose. If it's for helping people, psychology can get a lot of answers by studying what NLP people do. However, the explanations included in NLP theory are mostly unscientific. Anyway, this doesn't make NLP ineffective. NLP is a phylosophy, a form of practice and a culture, but not a science.
NLP gets a lot of ideas from psychology and other sciences.
I don't believe psychology is outdated, it's a very active field. I see a problem in the fact that psychology researchers are often not practitioners and they might lack a broad or an effective view on human beings and how can they inproved themselves.

As long as the human mind exists, Psychology isn't outdated!

As long as people continue to struggle for better understanding of themselves and the human world which by all means is so intricate and all to know without Psychology... we need it!

Hey, what is NLP, anyway? Whatever that maybe, I guess, it's just a sub-unit of Psychology and may possess different aspects from the main Psychology stuffs...

Hey, Psychology can't be outdated! I still wanna go finish a degree in it and be a great psychologist myself!!! ^_^

Most of NLP is based on outdated stuff, kind of a gee-whiz Earth- muffin organic sudden and superficial awareness of psychology and linquistics. It mostly appeals to the gee-whiz suddenly and superficially aware.

go on tell me what is NLP. I was thinking Psychoneuroimmunology but thats PNI. Neurolingustic programming?

I don't think so. Reason being is that a "broken" mind must be taught to think properly again. Psycologists, therapists, and counsellors are essential to this.
