In the UK we have a BA or BSc, an MSc or an MA and a PhD. In the usa they have a BA or BSc. an MSc or an MA an ABD and a PhD

Well we haven't had an ABD for very long and it really don't mean anything. I would think its going to be called an ABD in the UK as well.

The term ABD means "all but dissertation" - it is not a degree. It is an insulting term that describes what happens when someone quits their PhD program after they've taken some courses but without finishing the hard part - (that is, not writing a dissertation with original thought and research).

In general it would be a bad idea to use this term as if it was a degree, because it really means, "you couldn't do it."
