Can some please explain to me in very simple terms what it is?
is it something we do to ourselves or is it something that a person can use on you?

I am getting different information as to what it is but in terms of what it does to someone psychologically? I really want to know?

I think it is the scariest thing in the universe.

NLP basically means making people to change their behaviour through talking to them.

It is marketed as a 'therapy', supposedly to 'enable' people to overcome problems or 'blockages' which might be holding them back.

It is very controversial, because it is not recognised as having a scientific base rather it is a pseudoscience, it pretends to be scientific, but no scientist has ever shown that it works.

Of course put this 'changing the way people behave' (even if it works) in the hands of the unscrupulous then there is much cause for concern.

You do not go to a university to gain a doctorate in NLP, there are no certified courses, rather you are 'sold' the programme by NLP practitioner who makes quite a bit of money out of it.

It is the modern version of Snake Oil Salesmen, selling quack remedies to the vulnerable, but instead of skipping town, the NLP programmer could well end up with a hold on the 'patient' that is not healthy or scrupulous.

This psudoscientific clap trap is renowned in the world of threapy.

I read the story of one threpist who originated a new form of threapy which involved tapping certain parts of the body. When they started using it results where very good, and a partner couldn't wait to tell the world about it, and start 'selling' the new therapy to other therapists. Meanwhile the person who originated it was a trained scientist and decided to run a full scientific programme of observations to 'prove' the results.

The outcome was that it had no mesurable difference to doing nothing. The therapy didn't work.
This person informed the partner, who was marketing the new therapy that it had no basis in science. The partner split with the originator of the therapy, trashed their reputation, and has made a fortune out of selling the therapy which is now widley used amongst therapists, life coaches, and all the other snake oil salemen who jumped on the bandwagon and are raking in the cash.

Yet the person who invented the therapy proved it does not work.

Edit
How do you defend against NLP?

Use critical thinking skills.
If something sounds like nonsense it usually turns out to be nonsense. Stand up and don’t be afraid to ask questions. The big warning is when someone tells you that you need to ‘open your mind’ or not be ‘narrow-minded’. They are asking you to stop thinking. Reach for your critical thinking skills or your shotgun whichever is closer when this happens.

How do you spot it? Well look for stuff that is written in scientific language but is totally unfathomable. A good example is the post following this one. She uses scientific sounding words, and gives the promise of some secret that will transform your life and your relationships.

‘meta-model, metaprogram, sensory acuity, Milton-model, representational systems and submodalities among others’

These words are nonsense; they mean nothing and are simply the product of the imagination of some shyster designed to sound ‘scientific’ and give themselves the appearance of credibility.

Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is a set of techniques, axioms and beliefs that adherents use primarily as an approach to personal development. It is based on the idea that mind, body and language interact to create an individual's perception of the world and that perceptions, and hence behaviors, can be changed by the application of a variety of techniques; in particular, "modeling" which involves the careful reproduction of the behaviors and beliefs of those who have achieved 'excellence'. The early focus of NLP was the study of the underlying patterns in the language and techniques of noted and successful therapists in hypnotherapy, gestalt therapy and family therapy. The patterns discovered were adapted for general communication and effecting change.

IT IS THE COOLEST THING IN THE UNIVERSE and it basically tells us how stupid human beings really are.

NLP studies the structure of how humans think and experience the world. By understanding how we perceive the world through our five senses, we can then understand how some people can respond very resourcefully in a situation and others do not. Once you learn how those who remain resourceful set up their representations, then it's a simple matter to teach others to do the same thing.

Many of the models in NLP were created by studying people who did things exquisitely well. Models such as meta-model, metaprogram, sensory acuity, Milton-model, representational systems and submodalities among others, provide a diverse set of tools for creating change in yourself and others.

That's brifely stated.

Hope it helped.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming is defined as the study of the structure of subjective experience and what can be calculated from that and is predicated upon the belief that all behaviour has structure.

I learned this the other week, i am on a teacher training course, it goes down the lines of the way in which people learn, using See, touch and explain, or something like that.

It's a way of finding out how people learn

Here's an example from my own experience.

My girlfriend used to "argue" by throwing things about as her mother had done. Realising this was not the way to argue she decided in future we would have "heated debates". This allowed her to act in a different way by modifying how she argued to something closer to what most people think of. Once she learnt how to have "heated debates" she then started to call those "arguments" and thus her behaviur had been modified by changing actions associated to certain words.

To save your marriage I suggest to check this website http://save-marriage-secrets.gelaf.info
After 9 years in marriage with my hubby with 3 kids, my husband started going out with other ladies and showed me cold love, on several occasions he threatens to divorce me if I dare question him about his affair with other ladies, I was totally devastated and confused until a old friend of mine told me about a method on the internet that help people with the relationship and marriage problem by the powers of love spells, at first I doubted if such thing ever exists but decided to give it a try, when I tried it, it helped me and within one week my husband came back to me and started apologizing, now he has stopped going out with ladies and he his with me for good and for real.

Nah it's just a fancy palancy title to describe a way to help "programme" yourself to think and act in a positive way with others, to be assertive, to phrase questions in an enquiring way which will elicit quality responses, to respect diversity, reflect upon your words and actions and consider the impact of them on others......i could go on..............
