Id say TCP/IP as its the underlying communication protocol
then various services run over that protocol such as
IMAP/POP for email
HTTP/HTTPS for web pages
FTP/FTPS for file transfer

Why connect the computer through the main one? Plug the new computer into a LAN port on the router with a patch cord. Or get a wireless adapter and connect the computer to the router wirelessly But don't daisy chain the computers, that's just doing things the really hard way. (as well as, depending on what your connection and hardware is, a recipe for disaster) Good Luck
