Editions of some travel guides come with maps of South Africa but they are not comprehensive.
I would strongly recommend if you are driving in RSA for the first time, rent a navigation unit from Vodashop at the airport. It's like 59 rand a day (£4.50 or so) and they are really very good. Also, if you are flying between cities you can just carry the unit with you and hook it up to your next hire car.
Do make sure, however, that you do not leave the unit in the car, or you will get charged 6500 rand if it's stolen!!

I am not sure about the square mile called the City of London but I do know that specialist SA shops around greater London sell them.
There is a shop on the Broadway in Wimbledon, at the opposite end from the station.
There is another shop under the arches at Charring Cross Station.
W.H. Smith have maps of SA not sure about road maps.

We did a trip through South Africa in November. The worst places where East London and Mthatha (however you spell that). I was shocked and appauled by the state of these places.

Try a bookstore like Waterstones, they have a travel section with guidebook for different countries.
