In general, the speed of a soundwave through a medium is proportional to the square root of the product of its density and its modulus of elasticity.

-The equations will vary with the material in question. In general, higher density=faster wave propogation. In a denser substance, the molecules/atoms are closer together so wave pressure gets transferred quicker.
