People fight over land boundaries for all sorts of complicated reasons. Let's take Africa as an example. There are many border disputes happening there right now. Some people say that colonial powers like France, Great Britain and Portugal are partly to blame because they created the artificial borders we see on maps today. Until the Berlin Conference of 1884-5 (see link below), no such borders existed. The colonial powers used the Berlin Conference to slice up African land between them. The resulting borders placed many different social, cultural and liguistic groups under the same (often corrupt) adminstrative control. Countries were created that had no access to the sea and few natural resources which made the people within those countries economically disadvantaged. Unlike the borders in Europe which have developed over hundreds of years, the borders in Africa were imposed by the colonial powers. Add poverty, greed and corruption to the mix and you can soon appreciate the complexity of the situation.

I agree, we never ever 'own' land, but then again, that which we lay claim to and on which most of us live (in our houses surrounded by these plots), is rather EXPENSIVE, and there is a need to protect our investment. No?
Added to which, should I / you decide to sell and move on, any problem with a boundary is likely to create difficulties in doing so ...and so tie up our investments in the coffers of some organisation and not in my bank account.
Does that help clarify anything?

It is the old`£.s.d` syndrome again. Land is money. If a neighbour takes 1 foot of your land down a 100 feet length, he has taken money from you, as well as land measurement.

It's a territorial thing. We all have our own "space" and if anyone invades that space then we get territorial.
