Is it ok for a laptop to be switched on for 24 hrs a day. I use a very old desktop, thinking of getting a laptop now. I usually use the computer for Development (Mainly WEB programming, PHP,MYSql etc...) and music (editing, mixing, DJing etc) so i use a lot of CPU power. I also keep the downloads running all day long. I dont have any air-conditioning, do these laptops come with any in-built cooling FAN. Thanks a lot

The Laptop has thermostat system. when it heated the processor automatically starts the fan and after temperature control the fan is off. the Fan is not continuously working so the sound of fan is not come continuously. But these systems are not designed for 24*365 days working so after some time you may be found problem when you use 4*24 or more days continious.

Yes, should be okay.
You might want to invest in an external fan tray to place under it ... I didn't use one with last laptop, but decided to with this one, and I very much l ike the effect of doing so ... they run $25-50 US depending on what you get.

I don't have a desktop, run only a laptop, and am on the computer 16 or so hours a day, every day.

Mostly all electronic devices are capable and often have longer lifetimes, if configured properly, to 24/7/365 operation. Consider that most electronic component failures are due to expansion/contraction & voltage surge from constant power on/off cycles. The quality of the equipment is directly related to these parameters, computers that use heatsinks opposed to cooling fans are more sensitive to environment conditions.

Depends upon your room & environment temperature. Read the manuals and ask the vendor for standard temperatures under which the equipment gives best performance.
