It it a normal human trait to be greedy and dishonest. I am thinking about all those looters who have removed goods from the ship wreak on the Devon coast and have never had any intention of reporting what they have salvaged.

Come on folks, we all know we are talking about theft here and surely that is indefencible. It matters not what others do it is yourself that is answerable for your own actions. Do you really think these people are being offered something for nothing. This is a fundimental issue of morals.

It has to do with the way you were brought up. It's similar to the old liberal/conservative argument. Liberals think money comes from government (or the rich) and that you should give it to the lazy. Conservatives know that it comes from selling goods and services for a profit and that you have to earn it. If people understood that you get what you pay for, things would improve dramatically. Nothing is free... somebody has to pay for it. Unfortunately thieves think they can get away with thwarting the system.

Because our society is run on a slippery economic slope;
It's not that we can't afford to buy the things we want it's because the "city" dictates that we make a profit from everything; Our economy is dictated by greedy and crass politicians and bankers.
We pay for things we dont want - Olympics , Dome ; Carbon Taxes ( coming soon!! ) whilst billions of pounds are spent on Fossil Fuels and outdated Transportation systems.

Firstly they are not looters; there is a law which allows persons to remove beached articles ( Maritime and Wrecks Law ) as long as they declare them. Secondly all the items are insured by LLoyds of London as is every ship which sets sail from United Kingdom ; The people who have lost items will be compensated.
Thirdly would it be better that the ship was wrecked beyond recovery and all its contents spilt into the English Channel.
It is by good fortune that it was beached on the coast. Although some environmentalist wont be pleased as it has spilled 200 tonnes of oil into the coastline.

Most things in life we have to pay for. When something is available that doesn't cost then why not? A few weathered items from a beach is hardly a serious haul! The real people who are greedy and dishonest are the big shots at the top (company owners/ directors etc) who are making a packet by exploiting the
workforce and also doing a million tax dodges. Impart blame where it is deserved, don't attack the little people on the beach.

It is just plain theft, the goods are still owned by the shippers or the insurers, and some of it is owned by ordinary people bringing their belongings back to this country, other people who had nothing to do with the looting, will end up having to pay for it, increased premiums on insurance, and the like, the looter are feeding off the misfortune of others.

Aye...owt for nowt! They call it the 'greed factor', but look at it another way...when the Poll Tax was on the cards, most of us happily paid, but what did we get in return? Better streets, more aesthetics to our parks - no. We were skanked by local politicians. We were told people from as far north as Liverpool arrived for a look-see, and rewards...one of many cities north of Watford who suffered via looting greed of current and past governments.

It is a human thing! We all want something for nothing. It is the idea of getting something that you haven't worked for, didn't spent any money on etc...
If this was to happen in your back garden and a top of the range laptop was to appear (in full working order), are you saying that you would declare it?!!! Come on, you would be bragging about it!!!

Yes it is a sad world that we live in......They feel it is owed to them, remember all the taxes they pay....What I don't get is why was the military not out to stop this......
Look at it this way they are the same Brits, that could not intervene on celebrity big brother when any other country would have gone in to stop that international crisis....

We often try to find the easiest rout out of problems and work. By not reporting the discovery of the wreck, you can make it all yours, and salvage the goods for the money, whatever can be had out of it.

It seems to be human nature. Whenever there is a natural disaster there has to be a lookout for looters.
