I define the imagination as one's ability to dream or to think outside of their real environment ie. their surroundings, current relationships and events that have happened to them.
I think that imagination is related to your curiosity. The more curious you are, the more you tend to imagine things like 'what's on the other side of the hedge?', 'I wonder what that man standing at the crossing had for breakfast?' Thus you stimulate your imagination to think of answers.
To expand your imagination, I think you just generally need to do more in life. Read more (lack of pictures force you to think), travel more, go outside, see people, sit in a cafe and just people watch etc etc. Preferably do things that you don't do in your everyday life. The new stimuli should re-ignite your ability to imagine.

Read the Bible which is the undeniable Word of God.
It is the inexhaustible Wisdom of an infinite Mind. Over 40 authors written over hundreds of years and yet only ONE THEME and an infinite number of lessons. Your mind will deepen and expand.

Travel, see more of the world and meet new kinds of people and cultures.
Research and read materials of fiction genres (fantasy, sci-fi, thriller, horror etc) and create stories in these genres yourself.
If you have no objections against it, smoke some pot or hasj (that works well for me;)
good luck.

Practice, practice, practice. The imagination is like a muscle, the more you exercise it, the stronger it becomes.

Daydream some everyday. When you daydream you are actually thinking, focused on something, and you usually feel good afterwards. For some reason most people feel that daydreaming is bad for you, it isn't.
