Yes it's true. Cold sores are caused by the Herpes Simplex virus and I'm affraid there is no cure. The virus lays dormant at the base of the spine, during an outbreak, the virus travels along the nerves until it finds an easy break out spot, usually the lips.
There are many effective treatments for colds sores, some work very quickly.

It is a virus that you have for life that keeps reappearing throughout your life. Some people have the virus, some people don't. I find that my cold sores appear when I'm stressed / run down / ill with a cold etc. The best thing to do is to use a cold sore cream as soon as you feel one coming and it should not last long. Also keep area clean and wash hands after touching as they can easily spread to nose, eys etc. Contrary to popular belief, they are NOT contagious. If you kiss someone with a cold sore you will NOT get a cold sore, unless you are a carrier of the virus too!!!

Cold sores are caused by the virus known as herpes simplex type I (HSV-1). After the first episode of the disease, the virus lies dormant in the nerves or skin around the original area until something sets the virus off into another eruption. Colds, flu, and even stress can cause you to have an outbreak of cold sores. Why you have an outbreak at one time of life and not another is not clearly understood.

Does it hurt? If it does, for once thats actually a good thing. Herpes simplex. Its just a small strain of it, its not anything serious. If it doesnt, it could be real herpes, as in the STD. Or another STD, so you might wanna get it checked out if it doesnt bother you and it doesnt go away for a while. Get Abreva or Carmex or something to help the healing process along.
And, no kissing.

Yes, that's true. It's a strain of the herpes virus so guess how else you can catch it... Also, the cold sore virus resides in the back middle of the neck. A useless fact, I know, but thought I'd share it with you anyway. Zovirax is brilliant on them (although there are other remedies out there!) ;-)

You get cold sores because you are infected with the herpes virus. Once you are infected it stays in your body for the rest of your life. When you get run down it reduces your bodies immune system so you get a bout of cold sores. Pretty simple.

Every other answer is right, but I also suffer if I spend a lot of time in the sun! I found the best treatment is a cream called Vectovir. I had to get a prescription from the doctor though.

its a form of herpes and once you got it, you got it for life... they usually pop up when your immune system is down... the best time to tackle it is when you first feel that bump coming up... hit it fast before it has time to develop into a fully blown cold-sore.
