Watched Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas last night which is an adaptation of the novel by Hunter S. Thompson (I haven't read this). Does anyone have an opinion on whether Thompson was making any moral point with this novel? The film always leaves me feeling a little unsatisfied that nothing has really been resolved or achieved.

Thanks Tony A; I wasn't aware it was a depiction of Thompson's own life!

It was a reflection on his life at that time, a drugged up journalist, and as such didn't really have resolution - he wasn't looking for that, just a story. His life was pretty chaotic for many years, and though he was a brilliant journalist and writer (are both the same thing?) he didn't calm down until quite late in his life.

(Later) I recently read an article about Hunter, so I'm a bit of a cheat (but so was he!). In it the view is expressed, of "Fear and Loathing ", that "there can be no greater endorsement of the drug-crazed American counter culture".
The same article reports that a first edition of "Fear and Loathing" is for sale on eBay for more than $1m.

2 sheets of blotter acid, a quart of rum, a weight of Singapore Grey, half a dozen amyls, a big jar of mescaline, half a kilo of amphetamine, a phial of cocaine, a crate of mescal tequila, some adrenochrome and a .357 magnum with a box of hollow point rounds to keep the locals pacified.

Pretty good film (bit weird at places but hey, it doesn't hurt anyone!) but I preferred the book. I was kind of confused by the film, but still enjoyed it.
