saying hello means you are attending to someone - in other words you are showing the person or people that you have noticed them and are greeting them.hello is formal way of greeting someone and hi is the informal or is more of a friendly gesture.

In English - Hello
In Spanish - Ola - the H happens to be silent
In Russian - Draystutvyen (Drastuten)
In Polish - Chishc (Chyisch)
In Hindi - Namaste
it is simply showing the person respect for their presence either over the phone or in person.
