All the lights started to fail on my fiesta last night, just got it home.
Charged battery, but no ignition light this morning. Scared to use it in case the same thing happens again.
Anybody got any ideas please.

1. Never, Ever disconnect a battery cable while the engine is running, you WILL fry your alternator and probably the battery will explode in your face if any hydrogen is ignited by the resulting spark.

2. The battery may have developed an internal short circuit, so any charge gets conveted to heat, not into charging the battery.

3. The charge light (ignition) bulb may have blown. If this occurs, the generator will not charge as the generator field windings are often fed through the bulb.

4. Most likely the fuse has blown, check your fusebox lid for the one which supplies the generator. On fords this usually is a 10amp which also supplies the wipers, so if the wipers get stuck because of snow or ice - bam the fuse pops.

Check the fuse first, then check the battery.

Sounds like your alternator went bad and you drove home on battery. As the battery got weaker so did the lights. You sound like you just barely made it.

Start you car and remove the positive battery cable. If the car die immediately then the alternator is bad.

Check the fusable link going to the starter. You will probably need a test light, volt/ohm meter

ford fiesta? take it in both hands, crumple it up, and throw it in the waste-paper basket. It is, after all, a throwaway car...no?

Just joshin'!
