It depends if you left it on and flat down on the ironing board. If so it will singe the cover and may start a fire. If you left it on and upright then you will just burn a bit more electricity all day if the iron doesnt have a thermostat.

"will the house burn down if I have?"
Eh no. If you turned it off, it'll be fine. If you didn't then there's a chance.
My sister is always leaving the iron on and the house miraculously survives every time.

no, the iron will be off

If you have not, then it should also be ok but i'd watch the news if i were you. there are many household items that rely on a thermostat in order to not burn your house down. you're increasing the risk but hey, should be ok.

I'd pop home a lunchtime.

i do that all the time, my iron now has black stains all down the front. Try to think if you have any loose curtain next to it and also if you have left it lying face down (which is a bad thing). Good Luck

No. Because the iron gets to a certain temp then switches itself off automatically with the temperture gage. But you will use a shed load of electric as once it cools down it'll reheat itself to your set temp

You can buy irons that have a device that turns it off in ten minutes if you are not handling it.
