I know that a nurse can be a director/department head, so if you compare a head nurse with an hospital administrator (one for example admission administrator/director/manager) who would get the better salary?

Originally my major is college was pre nursing, but I decided I didn't want to do that because I didn't think nurses got compensated enough for the work they do. I changed my major so that I could go into health care administration instead because I did always want to be behind the scene planning directing implementing etc... I just graduated in December and would be happy being either a nurse or administrator, but since I no longer majored in nursing I am starting to feel as if it would have been more beneficial to become a nurse and then work my way up to an administrative role. My current degree is interdisciplinary studies-health studies and psychology, but I also have a business emphasis/specialization (because of my intent of becoming an administrator), and a bioethics, humanities, and society specialization. I really don’t know where to start (besides the bottom because of my lack experience), what area to go into. I do know that I want to work in the hospital.

There are varying levels of hospitals and levels of nursing. The larger the hospital generally the greater the incomes. Many administrators come from previous health profesional background ex. Nursing. Most administrators are salary meaning if they make $70,000/yr thats what they get no matter how many hours they put in. Generally it 50-60/hrs. Nusring in my area starts at just over $50,000/yr with the ability for overtime. If a nurse works the same number of hours as an administrator they will usually make close to the same yearly as the administrator. I know of some nurse that have made more tham the lower level administrators. especially in smaller facilities.

A Specialist Nurse in chrge of a Critical Care Unit or a Wing of the Hospital may be drawing more pay than a new comer Administrator. It depends also on whether the Adninistrator is part of the ownersip team.In that case they may fix his pay higher than even specialist Doctors. This is no reflection on the competence or market worth of the professional Nurse. Rather than comparison with others, the true yardstick should be: Am I happy with the present salary and other compensations and the work environment? If yes , don't bother about what others are getting or not getting. If you are not satisfied with the package and the environment, then don't linger on even if you are the highest paid person there. An uneasy mind will soon make you sick and then the extra income will vanish like so much dew in the morning Sun!

ok id see it like this: Electrical system of a hospital is the reason the hospital runs, without the electric the hospital would come to a stand still. This is the same for the heart because without the little electric pulses that cause the heart to contract it too would would just stop. If you think about the layout of the E.R. department and the busy flow of people where there's an entrance for ambulances where broken people come in and then a different exit for where the fixed people go out. The same is for the structure and blood flow of the heart in that the blood cells without oxygen enter the heart (damaged patients), they then get fixed up (by doctors in the E.R.) and then exit with oxygen (fixed patients). If you have the option to do this as a video you could get people to act out the two different structures (hospital and heart) and then compare the two visually. Hope this helped

You are comparing middle management positions with a nurse. who knows? but a hospital administrator (the honcho) makes much more than all of them. what, cannot make up your mind which one you will apply for? start low and work up, maybe.

Our hospital administrator was once a nurse. I believe he makes 6 figures which is far more than I could ever think of as a registered nurse.
