I am new to downloading and i heard that using file sharing programs like torrent will cause damage to my computer. Is this the case? I have a new computer and my dad will kill me if it crashes! Also it is legal to use such programs? I would appreciate any help! Cheers

It might be harmful if you've no Anti-Virus software, just be aware of executable files.

Using the program is legal, but what you're downloading is not necessarily legal. For example, It is illegal to download a copyrighted mp3 song, but it would be legal to download many other non-copyrighted materials.

First, bittorent is a legal program. However, the files that could be shared using the program are the ones that can be illegal, as it's illegal to download copyrighted software or music.

Lastly, it's really what you did download using the bittorent client that could be a harmful program. (Or something that has a virus in it.) Since you did not know whether the sharer of the file itself has a virus on his system that got passed to the file that he/she is actually sharing.
