..however my PC at work comes up with a list of options when inserting various sorts of cds, ie view list of photos with explorer etc. if there are images on the disc. I think i may have turned off the check box 'dont show this again' thing ages ago, how can i turn this back on?

Open Windows Explorer by pressing the Windows + "e" key.
Right-click the desired CD-ROM and select Properties from the menu.
Select the AutoPlay tab.
Select each item from the pulldown list and for the Action to perform, select "Take no action" to disable autorun, or pick the apporpriate action to take if enabling autorun.
Select OK.

i think this may work if not i appologise now.

open my documents(or any file like it)
at the top open tools-folder options
click the file types tab
then for each file type ur having problems with, highlight it then click acvanced
then you can change the settings as to what program you want to open it with when you start it.

there will already be a list there but you can add programs to the list if need be by clicking new

example
action = open with window media player

browse = c/ program files windows media.exe

damn yeah do newoldnew's idea, thats easier lol
