Same reason that tv adds are obnoxious, I'd guess? They're hoping to catch your attention? Maybe they hope you'll sign up just to make them go away?
And subliminal messages aren't beyond the scope of science and possibility. They use it in grocery markets (though it's been made pseudo illegal if they get caught)... So, yes. It's quite possible. And maybe that's why they don't care how annoying they are...
(it's not like all those adds originate in the U.S. where we have stricter laws about such things... )

Ja....well, if you know some German, you can move over to the German site and see the tasteful advertising they have there. However, the Europeans can be very tenacious about pop-ups and a medley of intrusions.
There are as many techniques to advertising as there are salesmen. A slow voice the way Hillary Clinton can be, talking to a room full of schoolchildren, is a way of instilling a message into someone half listening. That can be brainwashing.

i am not the smartest person either.strategies in marketing are ,the more you advertise the more people will subconsciously be influenced.pop up`s are just like the commercials on TV.the problem is,that the Internet has advanced so fast.more people spent time on the Internet now and it is easier to influence us through pop-up`s.i can relate to that.i don`t even turn the TV on hardly anymore since i have joined the on-line world .Turning the TV on used to be the first thing i did every morning after i got up and also when i would come home from work.now i turn my computer on and don`t even worry about the TV.i think you can modify you're pop-up blocker,so you don`t have to look and listen to all advertisement

If you see a hundred ads all in 20 point type with a black times new roman font, you ignore them all. If one of those ads is in red, it stands out, so you see it. Then they all go to red, so they all stand out, too. You begin ignoring them again, for they are all the same. Then one is printed in 36 point type, and it stands out. Then they are all in 36 point type. And so on. If we are in a crowd of people, and I want you to remember me, and nobody else, I have to make an impression. If you don't want to listen to me and are actively trying to ignore everyone in the room, Slapping you in the face will work like nothing else ever could. I then have your total and complete attention. Good or bad, you are paying attention to nothing but me, and that is exactly what I need. Ads play to human nature. Marketing is an applied study of behaviorism.

It's an old advertising axiom...better to be noticed.
Same reason you don't see many gray boxes in the shopping aisle, and why tiny CD-rom computer games come in HUGE empty boxes.

Any advertisement, if you see it properly, is obnoxious.
