You're SUPPOSED to wear absolutely nothing in a steam room and sauna and maybe sit on a towel. That's what steam rooms and saunas are for, and that's the best way to go about it to make sure you are getting the most out of the steam and heat. Anyone from Europe who regularly goes to a steam room or sauna will tell you this. You also shower before and after. Nobody wants your sweaty and dirty germs from your clothes and shoes in there. There is also supposed to be a trained person in charge of the steam room or sauna who makes sure everyone follows the no-clothing rule and that everyone maintains appropriate behavior at all times. The saunas and steam rooms in the States aren't like this, unfortunately. No one really knows how this ancient practice is supposed to be done.

The provided white towel. Or bring a towel.

I go to my local gym in town and although I do not take part, a lot of the older gentlemen seem not to mind nothing at all.

In coed facilityes I wear a small bathing suit - but I avoid co-ed facilities if I can. In men's only I wrap a towel around my waist and do not come in contact with the sauna if I can help it!

I would try to be considerate of other people and I would wear a large body size canvas bag. Have you ever seen an older person naked? I'm 5'3 110 lbs and still look like a potato on a stick. You young ones should fear gravity!

how about one of those steam room robes? they kind of go round you like a towel, or you could just wrap a towel around yourself? what do others wear - maybe go with the flow (all though I' prob feel uncomfortable going naked in my local gym steam room :)

Assuming it is NOT co-ed, you would wear a towel, typically. You can also wear a swim suit.

If it is co-ed, then, obviously you would wear a swim suit.
