Default Gateway is just the door to the internet. It is usually a router. Anything before the default gateway is your Local Area Network, Domain, Workgroup, etc. A default gateway means nothing more than where to find something else to talk to without going on to the internet.

The default gateway is your entrance to the internet. If you go to your start button and click that, select run, the type cmd and hit enter. In the black box that pops up (dos prompt) type ipconfig and hit enter it will show your ip address and default gateway. Say your ip address is 192.168.1.125, your default gateway will probably be 192.168.1.1. The gateway must always be on the same network you are one.
