In the fraction 3/x, x may be substituted by the set {1, 2, 4}.

This means that x can be replaced by any of the numbers 1, 2 or 4 and you will still get a valid fraction.

The same applies to (c) and (e). You can use any number in the set and still get a valid fraction.

The two odd sets are (b) and (d) which have negative numbers and a zero.

First the negative numbers: can you write 3/-2 ? Is it a valid fraction? It's certainly not the normal way of looking at fractions, but there's nothing wrong with it.

Now the zero: can you write 3/0 ? No, because it doesn't mean anything. You can't divide by zero so 3/0 is not a fraction.

So in the fraction 3/x, x may not be substituted by the set {0,10,20}.

I must admit that the question is very badly phrased. It should be "may not be substituted by each of the numbers from which of the following sets?"

The first thing I looked for in your choice of answers was "0". Any number over zero is meaningless. (basically infinity). Since "d" set contains a zero, I would say the answer is "d".

d. No zeroes in the denominator (the bottom of a fraction).

I would say the answer is b, because you can not divide by a negative number.

d.
If you don't believe use windows calculator and take 3 divided by 0.
For me ,its say "Cannot divide by zero."
Hence d is out.
