t depends on what you feel you need. Most women want to go natural at first and then change their minds as the contractions intensify. As with everything there are side effects, the most common one I see is women having issues pushing during contractions because their body is numb so the doctor has to monitor to tell the woman when to start pushing and its hard for her to then tell if she is pushing hard enough. I haven't seen anything more serious than that my best friend just says she can feel where it was but in her case they had to try 3 different times because her whole body wasn't getting numb just one side. But my goddaughter came out fine and its been 3 months with no problems. But getting and Epidural isn't the only option you can get local anesthesia

Hello there. Of course I can only speak for myself but I had all four of my babies with an epidural. Not that I had a choice, they were Cesarean section and if I wanted to be awake and see them born that was the only way. I have never had any side effects from the epidurals and the nicest part is that pain sensations come back so slowly that you have plenty of time to ask for pain meds if you need them.
Since that time I have had probably about 10 epidurals for a painful spinal condition that I was born with and have never had any problems related to the epidurals.
Sitll, as I said, I did not have a choice, it was my only option if I wanted to be awake. If I had been delivering vaginally I may have made a different choice although I do not think so. Pain during childbirth varies so greatly for each woman.
Perhaps the best thing to do would be to wait and see how you feel. Transition only lasts so long, you know there is an end (and a goal!) in site, maybe you would want to just get it over with.
I saw my daughter in law deliver and she never had anything for pain. She worked hard but never seemed to be in any pain.
Everyone is different!
Blessings

As usual, everyone has a story, but noone answered the question. The epidural doesn't cause back pain later. Different needles are used than were even used 10 years ago. Less spinal headaches, and almost no chance of other injuries.
When you go in labor, or just before, go talk with the anesthesiologist, and look at the needle and really listen to the talk, before you're in pain and deciding what to do.

I had every intention of 'going natural'... until the really painful contractions came and i heard the woman in the next delivery room screaming and i demanded an epidural, best thing i ever did, i din't have any side effects or complications etc, but everyone is different... my friend has had 4 bubs and never had an epidural so it's whatever suits you, you'll know when the time comes... glad i did have an epidural though... my bub was 10 pounds 3 ounces! good luck whatever you decide!... in oz we have the option of gas and a pethidine shot too... if you have gas make sure you drink heaps of water, it dries your throat out if you don't and you could end up throwing up

I can still feel where they put my epidural. I get spasms in my back. I have trouble sleeping. I have headaches. If I could go back and do it over again I wouldn't have the epidural because the pain from labor only lasts that day and the side effects from the epidural will last forever.

I cant say from personal experiance as I freaked out and demanded an epidural then freaked out again when they told me the risks and to keep still.thats when my daughter decided to arrive. So I didnt get it. I didnt really want it cause of my Mum.
But my Mum had epidurals with her labours, and hers are all horror stories. One didnt work untill after the birth and she says her back is messed up from it, she can no longer wear belts as it causes pain.
Natural isnt that bad. Yes it hurts but once the baby is in your arms you forget about it. Cause you have a beautiful baby.

It is your choice. You are responsible for your part of the equation post informed consent paper work. Yes an epi can cause side effects- depends on the person. In some maternity hospitals procedure not recommended for most mums & baby. It be one of the last options after pain killers oxygen, message lists goes on. High risk clients best to op for a 'c' section because either mum or baby has known medical problems eg. twins. Both Epi & 'C' have risks to mum &/or, baby side effects range from $, pain, stroke to death. OBGYN & midwife will discuss with you / client what's delivery plan is best. Personally for my son I had massage, an episitomy, vacuum extraction plus pain killers. Ended up with jelly legs from stirrups. My daughter natural plus episitomy all ok aside from hospital acquired lactational mastitis. My next child I'll op for the works inc. epi + C if need be. Yes, an XLNT partner helps alot during this mega ooch time. Bottom line no medical intervention faster recovery time/ less complication related to bacterial infection (surgical / environmental). Best of all natural plus apt pain management equals no unnecessary pain post delivery. BTW in all cases don't expect to be pain free labor & post delivery. You can op for epi with a C section instead of general anesthetic if you qualify. At least you get to see the birth. With the right care plan you'll both be in good hands per say. Cheers 99.

get the epidural from an experienced doc and be very careful about any onme moving the legs every time they move your leg they should move both of them together as you wont feel whats happening ....any ways i had one it was amazing took away all the pain and when my baby arrived i was not exhuasted. although sometimes i do feel a little pain in myrt hip that i was feeling when i was in labour....but that could be an effect of labour ,extra weight you never know, ill go for it again.
