I know that Animal Planet airs a show about the ASPCA police, who investigates cases of animal cruelty. My question is -- does this type of organization exist across the country? My neighbors starve their dogs and keep constantly on short chains out of reach from food and water. I called my local Animal Control office to report abuse and they said they couldn't do anything about it.

I don't know why Animal Control won't do anything about it. They said it wasn't their responsibility but offered no suggestions of who to call.

PhD, go and vent your frustrations on your own questions ... I didn't ask for opinions on whether or not you support animal rights organizations. People like you who can't leave well enough alone without thrusting in some negative input are a waste of space and worthless.

The laws are that pets are the property of the owner, and unfortunately somethings that may seem unethical are legal (just starting vet tech school here). But pet owners are required to provide food and water for their pets, but they are not required to interact with them or even to get routine medical care. If your Animal Control Officers (usually required to investigate charges of animal cruelty) won't help in your state, then I would call your local SPCA and ask who you need to contact. Unfortunately not every state has that wonderful branch of law enforcement. Good Luck.

Yes it does exist across the country. For some stupid reason in some states the law has not been passed yet. You could take this to court. Make sure you take plenty of pic for proof. You could also contact Animal Planet about this. Don't bother calling Animal Control they really can't do anything about owned pets. Call the humane society instead and see if they can help. I really hope it doesn't get any worse and I would love to know the out come on this. Good luck and thank you for being a voice for the animals.

Call the Humane Society. Or organize a group of animal lovers and keep writing to the mayor and police department until they act on it...

There should be an SPCA in every state or country. For us in Malaysia, we have SPCA branches in every state, just that some of them are not very active and acts as a pound... Why can't the Animal Control office do anything about it?

I don't think we have anything like the ASPCA police here in NC but, you might want to call the sheriff's department. They are the ones who usually handle it around here.

Since you already talked to your neighbors, and you already called the authorities go take the dog.
If the dog is starving and the neighbors will not do anything about it, then do what you have too.

If the police won't do anything, I think the Humane society might be able to help.
